Post #5. World Population and Fertility

In the report State of World Population 2007 one of the main topics is the concern of urban growth for the world. More the half the world’s population is living in urbanized areas and this is growing at an alarming rate “By 2030, the towns and cities of the developing world will make up 80 per cent of urban humanity”. They also comment of rate of population growth due to natural causes. Both resulting in an increase in global warming and environmental stress.

“As globalization proceeds, the urban transition is having an enormous impact on ideas, values and beliefs” By changing their living situation, you may also change the way they act. Infant mortality rates will likely go down, not only at birth, but as infanticide as families will be in a secure living situation. It may also decrease population growth as reproductive technologies may be introduced and accepted by the society (and as they may move towards a more industrial mode of life (and reproduction)). Growing cities typically attract many immigrants as well. Even if the immigrants are from a different part of the same continent, different cultures and values will mash and create a more unicultural society.

Urbanisation may be a good thing to eliminate a lot of poverty in many societies, however there are some things that need to be solved as soon as possible to prevent further environmental issues: the more sustainable mode of basic resources must be implemented (as well as introduced here and switched over as quickly as possible). This may not prevent all issues, but will surly slow them. I believe culture loss in inevitable in this situation so we must try to document all the cultures, as well as what they get altered into, or else we may regret it in the future.

  1. I am also concerned about where the world is headed with the alarming population growth. I hope that the advancements made in reproductive health can slow the growth and allow people to be more in control of their fertility. Education is extremely important. I hope the Jolie-Pitt fad catches on and more people choose to adopt!

  2. I agree with your last statement. Sadly it seems is inevitable that cultures are being lost. It’s almost like a whole other world that is slowly being left behind. These cultures are precious, and like he saying goes we must understand and know our past in order to understand our future. These cultures must be documented.

  3. I agree that these cultures must be documented, however I would like to know the cause of the decline of these cultures. Is it the fact that we as a people are acting more liberal as a whole? Are we starting to think for our selfs and questioning the traditions that have been passed down to us - if so are new cultures starting just as some new religions have started within this "New Age"

  4. its really sad how the world is changing and our beliefs and values within our own culture are fading. ukrainian is my culture, and the only thing i do that is still ukrainian now is having the 12 dishes at christmas. so i agree that cultures should be documented too. it's really easy to get caught up in everything that isnt really that important to us
